Un giorno scopre Sultana’s Dream\, un racconto provocatorio scritto da Rokeya Hossain nel 1905\, che immagina un’utopia chiamata Ladyland\, dove le donne sono al potere mentre gli uomini si occupano delle faccende domestiche. Affascinata da questo mondo visionario\, Inés intraprende un viaggio attraverso l’India per esplorare la vita di Hossain e cercare spazi in cui le donne possano vivere liberamente e in pace. Mentre affronta le sue difficoltà emotive\, tra cui la fine di una relazione\, Inés intreccia la sua storia con quella di Hossain\, approfondendo temi di disuguaglianza di genere\, paura e stigmi sociali. Ho capito subito che questo era il prossimo film che volevo realizzare. […] Come potevo mantenere il carattere originale della storia\, ricca di sfumature e di riferimenti alla realtà del Bengala all’inizio del XX secolo\, senza tradirla con un approccio occidentale? Così è nata l’idea della protagonista Inés: una giovane artista spagnola contemporanea\, […] che rimane affascinata dal libro e decide di viaggiare in India alla ricerca di tracce dell’autrice e della stessa Ladyland. \nBIO REGISTA \nIsabel Herguera è un’animatrice e regista spagnola. Ha studiato belle arti all’Universidad del País Vasco e all’Art Academy di Düsseldorf\, per poi conseguire un master alla Calarts di Los Angeles\, dove ha diretto il cortometraggio Los Muertitos (1993)\, incentrato sul muro tra Messico e Stati Uniti. Nel 1997 ha fondato Loko Pictures\, producendo diversi spot pubblicitari e il cortometraggio The Balloon (2003). Dopo il ritorno in Europa\, ha diretto il festival Animac e coordinato il Laboratorio de imagen en movimiento ad Arteleku. È docente presso numerose prestigiose istituzioni e ha tenuto workshop di animazione in tutto il mondo. Sultana’s Dream è il suo primo lungometraggio. \nPLOT \nInés\, a Spanish artist living in India\, discovers Sultana’s Dream\, a thought-provoking tale written by Rokeya Hossain in 1905 that imagines a utopia called Ladyland\, where women govern while men undertake domestic responsibilities. Captivated by this visionary world\, Inés embarks on a journey across India to explore the life of Hossain and seek out spaces where women can live freely and peacefully. As she navigates her own emotional struggles\, including a relationship’s end\, Inés intertwines her narrative with Hossain’s\, delving into themes of gender inequality\, fear\, and the societal stigmas faced by women. The film blends poetic visuals and cultural symbolism to challenge existing norms\, envisioning a future where change is possible through imagination and critical thought. \nDIRECTOR’S NOTE \nSultana’s Dream by Rokeya Hossain fell into my hands by chance\, while I was sheltering from the rain in a bookstore in India. I knew immediately that this was the next film I wanted to make. […] How could I maintain the original character of the story\, full of nuances and references to the reality of Bengal in the early twentieth century\, without betraying it with a Western look? This is when we came up with the idea of the main character Inés: a young Spanish contemporary artist\, […] who is fascinated by the book and decides to travel to India in the search for traces of the author and Ladyland itself. \nDIRECTOR’S BIO \nIsabel Herguera is a Spanish animator and filmmaker. Cerco di minimizzare il messaggio. Cerco di includerlo\, ma in modo leggero\, con una risata. Non voglio forzarlo. Quando il film è stato selezionato per la Berlinale\, Sebastian Markt\, direttore della Berlinale Generation\, mi ha scritto: “La capacità di condividere una stanza con persone per ridere e ridere è un privilegio in questi tempi\, e abbiamo riso\, guidati dal tuo film\, dai suoi personaggi affascinanti e dalla sua leggera (ma molto apprezzata) stravaganza!” Mi è piaciuta molto quella frase. A gripping story that celebrates friendship and the value of protecting the place you love. \nDIRECTOR’S NOTE \nI have to say that I’m not a ’’message“ kind of director in that sense. I actually try to downplay the message. I do try to get it in there\, but lightheartedly\, with a laugh. I don’t want to force it. When the movie was selected for Berlinale\, Sebastian Markt\, who is Head of Berlinale Generation\, wrote to me: ‘‘The ability to share a room with people to laugh and laugh is a privilege in these times\, and laugh we did\, led by your film\, its charming characters and mild (but much appreciated) wackiness!“ I really liked that sentence. However\, Lily\, the girl of his dreams\, seems more interested in his younger sister\, Joe. Disappointed and discouraged\, Jaap Peter loses interest in the party. However\, he soon realises that his presence and the strong bond with his relatives are essential to the success of the celebration and rediscovers the value of community and love. \nDIRECTOR’S NOTE \nI wanted to make a film starring a person with a developmental disability. An accessible film\, in which Down syndrome was not the subject\, but a side issue. I have been making films with children for a long time and my experience is that children with a disability often have a supporting role. I wanted to change that. Filmmaking is a high-pressure work process. To make it accessible for our actor Wesley van Klink\, we had to examine that process and tailor it to him. […] Jippie is a main character who may not initially resemble all the children who see the film. But after 90 minutes that has completely changed. \nDIRECTOR’S BIO \nMargien Rogaar is a Dutch filmmaker. After graduating from the Film Academy of the Netherlands\, she directed several short films and shows for Dutch television. Il secondo film\, Salaviinanpolttajat (2017)\, celebra il centenario dell’indipendenza della Finlandia e racconta la storia di due distillatori clandestini ingannati da un imbroglione. Il terzo film\, Kaukainen planeetta (2023)\, vede la guardiana del faro Marlanda partire per lo spazio alla ricerca del fratello. Un omaggio al cinema delle origini\, la trilogia mette in luce l’umanità\, l’inventiva e la vita quotidiana di persone spesso trascurate dalla società. \nNOTE DI REGIA \nL’origine di Mykkätrilogia risale all’inizio del secondo decennio degli anni Duemila\, quando ho conosciuto [il rumorista] Heikki Kossi\, che si era trasferito a Kokkola. Volevo realizzare una performance cinematografica in cui tutti i suoni fossero creati dal vivo mentre il film veniva proiettato sullo schermo e luce e ombra interagivano tra loro. Sono appassionato di rumori dal vivo\, per me la loro creazione ha qualcosa di magico. An homage to early cinema\, the trilogy highlights the humanity\, inventiveness and everyday life of people often overlooked by society. \nDIRECTOR’S NOTE \nThe origin of Mykkätrilogia dates back to the beginning of the second decade of the 2000s\, when I met [foley artist] Heikki Kossi\, who had moved to Kokkola. I wanted to make a film performance where all sounds were created live while the film was projected on the screen and light and shadow interacted with each other. I am passionate about live noises\, for me their creation has something magical about it. It fascinates me to see how different objects produce mechanical sounds that\, together with the images\, create completely new meanings. I think this kind of film performance is close to the magic and playfulness that characterised film screenings in the early days of cinema. \nDIRECTOR’S BIO \nJuho Kuosmanen\, born 30 September 1979 in Kokkola\, is a Finnish film director and screenwriter.
