Utilizzando la disobbedienza civile\, cercano di sensibilizzare il governo sull’emergenza climatica e ecologica. Le loro iniziative includono censimenti delle specie animali e vegetali a rischio\, pianificazione di manifestazioni e audaci incursioni in cantieri e fabbriche di cellulosa. Attraverso immagini mozzafiato della foresta finlandese\, seguiamo il percorso di crescita di Ida\, che diventa leader del nuovo Movimento Forestale\, sfidando le grandi industrie e l’atteggiamento conservatore delle generazioni precedenti. Un racconto che rappresenta un inno alla natura e a chi vuole proteggerla\, trasmettendo un messaggio di speranza e determinazione nella lotta per la salvaguardia dell’ambiente. \nNOTE DI REGIA \nQuesto film è una storia d’amore\, ma l’oggetto amato è la foresta. Volevo ricordare a tutti com’era essere giovani\, quando le nostre menti erano ancora pure. Spero che\, riconoscendosi in questi ragazzi\, si possa provare più empatia verso di loro. Nei film sull’attivismo\, nel tentativo di dare maggiore credibilità\, spesso questo lato umano manca. Io\, invece\, ho cercato di catturare le riflessioni di una generazione. Ho visto la loro onestà e semplicità quasi infantile\, ma anche la loro capacità di agire come leader strategici\, guidando le loro “truppe” in battaglia. Come regista\, trovo queste contraddizioni davvero affascinanti. \nBIO REGISTA \nVirpi Suutari\, nata nel 1967\, è un’affermata regista finlandese conosciuta per uno stile cinematografico personale che sfida i confini tra realtà e finzione. Le sue opere sono state presentate in festival di prestigio come IDFA\, Locarno e il festival di Göteborg. Il suo documentario The Idle Ones (2001) è stato nominato per il premio EFA come miglior documentario europeo\, e ha vinto numerosi riconoscimenti tra cui il premio come miglior documentario nordico al Nordisk Panorama. Suutari ha ricevuto tre volte il premio Jussi e fa parte dell’Accademia del Cinema Europeo. Il suo documentario su Alvar Aalto\, Aalto (2020)\, ha ottenuto distribuzione mondiale. \nPLOT \nTwo young activists\, Ida and Minka\, are part of the group Extinction Rebellion Finland and confront the growing biodiversity crisis in Finland. Using civil disobedience\, they try to make the government aware of the climate and ecological emergency. Their initiatives include censuses of endangered animal and plant species\, planning demonstrations and daring raids on construction sites and pulp mills. Through breathtaking images of the Finnish forest\, we follow Ida’s journey of growth\, as she becomes the leader of the new Forest Movement\, challenging industrial powers and the conservative attitude of previous generations. A story that is a hymn to nature and to those who want to protect it\, conveying a message of hope and determination in the fight to protect the environment. \nDIRECTOR’S NOTE \nThis film is a love story\, but the object of your affection is the forest. I guess I wanted to remind everyone how it felt when we were younger and our minds were still pure. Hopefully\, when you recognize yourself in these youngsters\, you can feel more empathy towards them. This human side is something you don’t always see in films about activism\, because they want to seem credible\, but I tried to capture the way this generation reflects on things. I saw their almost child-like honesty and straightforwardness\, and then I saw them behaving like strategic leaders\, leading their troops to a battle. As a filmmaker\, you are so intrigued by such contradictions. \nDIRECTOR’S BIO \nVirpi Suutari\, born in 1967\, is an established Finnish filmmaker known for a personal filmmaking style that challenges the boundaries between reality and fiction. Her works have been presented at prestigious festivals such as IDFA\, Locarno and the Gothenburg Film Festival. Cerco di minimizzare il messaggio. Cerco di includerlo\, ma in modo leggero\, con una risata. Non voglio forzarlo. Quando il film è stato selezionato per la Berlinale\, Sebastian Markt\, direttore della Berlinale Generation\, mi ha scritto: “La capacità di condividere una stanza con persone per ridere e ridere è un privilegio in questi tempi\, e abbiamo riso\, guidati dal tuo film\, dai suoi personaggi affascinanti e dalla sua leggera (ma molto apprezzata) stravaganza!” Mi è piaciuta molto quella frase. I actually try to downplay the message. I do try to get it in there\, but lightheartedly\, with a laugh. I don’t want to force it. When the movie was selected for Berlinale\, Sebastian Markt\, who is Head of Berlinale Generation\, wrote to me: ‘‘The ability to share a room with people to laugh and laugh is a privilege in these times\, and laugh we did\, led by your film\, its charming characters and mild (but much appreciated) wackiness!“ I really liked that sentence. I want people to leave the theater with a smile. \nDIRECTOR’S BIO \nMascha Halberstad is a Dutch filmmaker and illustrator\, born in 1973. During the 1960s and 1970s he collaborated with Hollywood’s biggest stars and directed iconic films such as Serpico (1973)\, Dog Day Afternoon (1975) and Network (1976). Lumet directed over 50 films\, receiving the Academy Award® for Lifetime Achievement in 2005. He died in 2011 in New York.

Some silences are gentle\, some are loud. At times it’s violent\, at times it’s empowering. Impossibilitata a mantenere un’occupazione stabile a causa della sua condizione\, accetta un lavoro rischioso offertole da una misteriosa donna di nome Paige\, che le promette $3\,000 per riprendere la sua auto dall’aggressivo fratello Henry. Ariella era in cassa integrazione dal suo lavoro all’Angelika Film Center\, mentre io lavoravo come elettricista. Siamo stati costretti a riflettere su dove ci trovavamo e quanto fossimo lontani dai nostri obiettivi: realizzare film insieme. Il mondo intero si era fermato e non sapevamo quale direzione avrebbe preso\, ma se dovevamo intraprendere un progetto\, quel momento era perfetto per capire come procedere\, così che\, quando tutto fosse ripartito\, potessimo dedicarci a qualcosa che amavamo. \nBIO REGISTA \nRyan J. Sloan è un elettricista originario del New Jersey\, regista e sceneggiatore per passione. Ha diretto due cortometraggi: Somewhere Road\, nel 2012\, e A Message for James\, nel 2019\, scritto insieme alla compagna e attrice Ariella Mastroianni\, con cui condivide un forte sodalizio artistico. I due non hanno studiato cinema e la loro formazione è completamente autodidatta. Insieme hanno scritto e realizzato Gazer (2024)\, finanziandolo autonomamente con i risparmi di una vita\, dopo essersi dedicati a lavori più svariati\, spesso adottando come location le case in cui Sloan era assunto per eseguire riparazioni elettriche. \nPLOT \nFrankie is a young mother suffering from dyschronometry\, a rare degenerative brain condition that prevents her from perceiving time correctly. Plagued by paranoia and frequent blackouts\, she records her life on cassette tapes to remain present in her chaotic reality. Unable to maintain stable employment due to her condition\, she accepts a risky job offered to her by a mysterious woman named Paige\, who promises her $3\,000 to retrieve her car from her aggressive brother Henry. When Paige fails to show up for the appointment\, Frankie sets off in search of her\, ending up trapped in a maze of revenge\, deceit and murder. Following Paige’s trail between dilapidated motels and noisy factories\, Frankie will face not only external dangers\, but also the possibility that her own condition will make her complicit in her disappearance. \nDIRECTOR’S NOTE \nWe started developing and writing Gazer during the COVID lockdown. Ariella was furloughed from her job at the Angelika Film Center\, and I was working as an electrician. We were forced to reflect on where we were and how far we were from what we wanted to do\, which was to make movies together. The whole world had stopped\, and we didn’t know where it was gonna go\, but if we were going to do something\, it was the right time to figure it out so that when the world did start up again\, we could at least do something we loved. \nDIRECTOR’S BIO \nRyan J. Sloan is a New Jersey-born electrician\, filmmaker and screenwriter by passion. He has directed two short films: Somewhere Road\, in 2012\, and A Message for James\, in 2019\, co-written with his partner and actress Ariella Mastroianni\, with whom he shares a strong artistic partnership. The two have not studied filmmaking and their training is completely self-taught. Together they wrote and made Gazer (2024)\, financing it themselves with their life savings\, after having devoted themselves to a wide variety of jobs\, often adopting as locations the houses where Sloan was employed to carry out electrical repairs.
